What was your life like without social media? People who were born before the Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat may not be able to understand. We used to keep in touch by visiting and calling our friends and family. Today, it is not the same. Social media is more convenient and cheaper. Even if we do visit our friends and decide to spend quality time, the phone is a huge distraction. We use social media for several purposes such as playing games and sharing important events. Nothing is surprising when we meet up with friends because they have kept tabs on our social accounts. This new way of life suddenly becomes an addiction. It differs in terms of design and structure. Instagram, a mobile application accommodates 400 million users. Snapchat was introduced in the digital world in 2013. It is a very fun, interactive network which attract about 158 million people.

How to know if you are addicted?


It is easy to tell if you are addicted to social media. If you use social media excessively then you may be addicted. Some people may use it excessively for work. This is an exception. You are addicted when you feel like you cannot go a day without it. Your world revolves around it. You post everything about your daily activities and personal life. This can be really annoying for your audience. Has anyone complained to you about being addicted? If yes you may need to start reducing the amount of time you spend on social media.


Why do we need to reduce the amount of time we spend on social media?

Scrolling through your timeline and newsfeed take up a lot of precious time. You can spend several hours going through photos. These 10 hours could be spent doing something more productive. You won’t miss out on anything if you reduce the amount of time you spend on social media. The information will always be there. There is no need to keep checking your phone every 10 minutes. Your friends may not be interested in sharing certain things on social media. People tend to think that social media bring us closer together and we can know a person through their personal account. Sadly, this is not true. You cannot connect deeply with someone through social media.

Ways to stop social media addiction

It is possible to stop social media addiction. You have to be disciplined and committed. There are things you can do to get rid of this addiction. It is hard to get rid of any form of addiction. You may experience withdrawal symptoms but you can overcome. You may feel anxious when you have not logged in for 24 hours because you think you are missing out on important updates. After awhile you realize that these updates are not so important.

Deactivate your accounts

If you don’t want to remove your social media account permanently then you can deactivate it. Most social media accounts can be deactivated. You need to go to the settings and deactivate it for several days. You can focus on yourself but still remain connected with the social media. After you take some time off then you can activate it. This helps you to gain some sort of control.

Turn off notifications

If you do not wish to deactivate your account then you can turn off the notifications. This will reduce the urge to check your phone every time you hear a ping. Notifications can be very distracting. It is very common for people to pause their conversations and activities just to check their notifications.

Establish boundaries

Train yourself to be disciplined by establishing boundaries. Only check your social media account at a particular time. Also, give yourself a time limit. For example, only spend one hour or less on social media.

Get a hobby

Most people use social media for entertainment. Find a hobby and entertain yourself. This will help you to reduce the amount of time you dedicate to social media. You are more well rounded as well. Think about things you enjoy doing and start doing them. Give social media a break.

Spend time with family and friends

Forget social media when you hang out with your family and friends. Surround yourself with people who make you forget that you even have a cell phone. You will be happier in the presence of wonderful people than sitting on the bed with your phone scrolling through Instagram.
