Step by step method

  • 1

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit).

  • 2

Take one sheet of puff pastry and slice it into 8 rectangles. Out of those 8 rectangles, slice 4 of them into horizontal strips.

  • 3

Lay out the 4 full rectangles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread a layer of Nutella on each rectangular pastry, leaving a small gap around the edges

  • 4

In a small bowl, mix 1 small egg and 1 teaspoon of milk to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash over the edges of the pastry rectangles with Nutella.

  • 5

Use the horizontal strips to create a criss-cross pattern over the Nutella, ensuring you leave small spaces between the strips.

  • 6

Brush the top of the pastries with more of the egg wash for a golden finish and bake in the preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius for about 12 minutes or until the pastries are golden and puffed up.

  • 7

Once the puff pastries are baked and have cooled slightly, dust them with powdered sugar for a ghostly appearance and add 2 edible eyes to each pastry to give them that adorable and spooky look.

Tips & variations

  • Ensure that your puff pastry is chilled, as it's easier to handle and results in flakier pastries.

  • When spreading Nutella on the pastry, be sure to leave a small gap around the edges to prevent it from oozing out during baking.

  • When creating the criss-cross pattern with the horizontal strips, make sure they are evenly spaced and that you have small openings between the strips to reveal the Nutella.

  • Adding powdered sugar and edible eyes after baking gives the pastries a fun and spooky appearance. This is where you can get creative and make them as cute or eerie as you like.
