Jamaican Steamed Fish is a quick and easy recipe that is light and delicious. Perfect for after having a long day at work, and can be served with your side of choice.
The adventure begins with the star of the show – the fish. With great care, I clean and wash it, ensuring every nook and cranny is spotless. Afterward, I gently pat it dry with a paper towel, removing any lingering moisture. This step is crucial to ensure the salt and pepper adhere to the fish beautifully. Sprinkling both sides and inside the cavity with salt and pepper is like a promise of the bold flavors that await.
Now, it’s time to prepare the seasonings and vegetables. I wash and carefully cut them, paying attention to every detail. The okras are sliced diagonally, adding a touch of elegance to the dish. The carrots, potatoes, and pumpkin are thinly sliced, ensuring they cook through easily and become tender.
In a pot set over medium heat, I add the Fish Tea soup mix and 1 cup of water, along with the freshly cut vegetables. The vibrant colors brighten the pot, and as it comes to a boil, the aroma is an invitation to a feast. I cover the pot, and within just 10 minutes, the vegetables soften and release their flavors into the broth.
With the vegetables prepared, it’s time to introduce the fish, along with a generous pat of butter and a medley of seasonings. The pot is now a simmering cauldron of flavors, the fish infusing its essence into the broth, and the kitchen fills with the irresistible scent of the sea.
As the dish simmers on low heat for another 10 minutes, I watch the gravy reduce, creating a soupy consistency that’s simply irresistible. The dish comes to life, a celebration of Jamaican cuisine with the perfect balance of flavors, textures, and colors.
When the gravy is reduced to my liking, I turn off the pot. The dish is ready to be served, and each bite is a delicious tribute to the flavors of Jamaica.
