The weekly letter

A weekly read on style, design, and the things worth your attention.

Linen is summer's most honest fabric. It wrinkles, it breathes, it earns its keep. A good linen shirt or a pair of wide-leg trousers will outlast any synthetic trend because the material itself has nothing to prove.

This is a capsule built around three anchors: linen, a white dress that does not ask for fussing, and one pair of sandals that can walk through a whole season. Flat-lay logic applies, each piece earns its place by pairing with at least two others.

The handkerchief linen button-down

Not the stiff, board-like linen of corporate resort wear. This is a washed handkerchief weight that drapes rather than stands at attention. The collar stays soft, the sleeves roll up and stay rolled. It works tucked into a high-waisted trouser or tied at the waist over a cotton dress. The color is a natural ecru that takes its hue from the flax, not a bottle.

The white cotton sundress

Not the fitted sheath, not the boho maxi. A midi in heavyweight cotton poplin with an A-line silhouette and a square neckline. The cut gives the hips room without swimming the waist. Armholes are cut high enough to conceal a bra strap. This is the dress that goes to a lunch, a gallery, and a late ferry ride without needing a change. Wash it warm, hang it damp, wear the creases.

The flat leather slide sandal

One good sandal. A single wide strap across the instep in vegetable-tanned leather that will darken with wear. The sole is leather with a slight grip, not rubber. Heel height is zero. This sandal works with every hemline from shorts to a floor-length skirt because it shows enough foot to feel bare but enough leather to feel finished. It replaces last year's pool slides entirely.

The wide-leg linen trouser

A full leg that skims the floor in a mid-weight oatmeal linen. The waistband is flat front with side zip, no elastic, no drawstring. These are trousers, not pajamas. They sit just above the hip and fall in a clean line that does not grip the thigh. Pair with the button-down, the white dress's sibling top, or a cotton knit. The length means they work barefoot or with a low heel.

The striped cotton poplin shirt

A Breton stripe in navy and off-white, but the cut is not the classic marinière. It is a relaxed camp collar with a straight hem and a breast pocket. The fabric has enough body to hold its shape untucked but softens after the first wash. This shirt works as a swim cover, a layer over the white dress, or alone with the slide sandal. It retires the old graphic tee.

The high-waisted raw hem denim short

Not the cut-off made from old jeans. These are purpose-built shorts in a mid-blue non-stretch denim, with a 10-inch rise and a hem that hits mid-thigh. The raw edge is left unfinished, which keeps the length from looking precious. They fit like shorts, not like a denim skirt that forgot to go down. Pair with the striped shirt or the linen trouser's opposite half.

The natural straw tote bag

A round or rectangular basket shape in woven raffia or palm leaf, with leather handles that sit comfortably on the shoulder. No lining, no zipper. It holds a book, a sunscreen, a water bottle, and the folded linen button-down. The material is seasonal by definition, it cracks in winter storage, but that is part of its honesty. Replace a quilted leather bag for the months of June through August.

The lightweight knit cardigan

A fine-gauge cotton or linen blend knit in a pale grey or beige. The silhouette is boxy and cropped, ending just above the trouser waistband. No buttons, it is meant to be thrown over the shoulders or tied at the neck. It provides the only layer that the white dress needs when the evening breeze arrives. It replaces the denim jacket for real summer warmth.

The silk slip skirt

A bias-cut skirt in matte silk charmeuse, midi length, with a drawstring waist that sits low on the hips. The color is a deep sand or pale clay, not black, not ivory. It moves with the body without clinging to the wrong places. Wear it with the linen button-down tucked in and the flat sandals for an evening that feels dressed without trying. It replaces last year's printed midi.

The cotton eyelet top

A short-sleeved top in white cotton eyelet, the fabric is the pattern, not a print. The cut is a relaxed blouson shape with a gathered neckline and a tie closure at the front. Eyelet breathes like mesh but looks like a Sunday morning. It works under the cardigan or alone with the denim shorts. The raised texture adds interest to an otherwise minimal capsule.

The espadrille wedge sandal

A wedge heel made of natural jute, the upper in canvas or leather in a neutral beige. The height is three inches, which is enough to lift a linen trouser hem but not enough to compromise a walk to dinner. The jute sole compresses over time and molds to the foot. This is the shoe that goes with the white dress and the silk skirt when the flat sandal feels too casual.

The beaded leather slide sandal

A second sandal: a flat slide with a wide strap covered in small wooden or shell beads on a leather base. The natural materials add texture and color without competing with the capsule palette. They work with the eyelet top and the slip skirt for a more ornamented look. The beadwork catches light and gives the ear a gentle rattle. Not a mule, not a sport slide.

The woven raffia sun hat

A wide-brim fedora or Panama style in tightly woven natural raffia, with a dark grosgrain ribbon band. The brim is wide enough to shade the face but soft enough to roll up for packing. It is the only hat that goes with a linen suit and a swimsuit with equal ease. It finishes every outfit in the capsule without trying to be the center of it.

Start with one piece: the flat leather slide sandal. It is the anchor that makes the white dress feel grounded and the linen trousers feel finished. Once that pair sits in your closet, the rest of the capsule builds itself around it.
